Hurt

“People who love themselves, don’t hurt other people. The more we hate ourselves, the more we want others to suffer.” -Dan Pearce

H is for Hurt

We can experience hurt from either a physical or emotional pain. A physical pain would be when our bodies are injured in some way. An emotional pain comes from comments or actions that hurt our feelings. Although both these types of hurt are intertwined in a way it has been said that emotional pain is far worse to deal with than physical pain. The reason that I believe this to be true is because when you get hurt physically there are ways to alleviate the pain and after a while the pain may subside (although there are some situations where physical pain can last a lifetime). Hurt caused by words or actions, in my opinion, cannot be healed as easily. Emotional pain often takes a longer time to heal, if ever, and leaves much deeper scars than physical pain can. There is no medication to take away the hurt from emotional pain. I think that more people experiencing emotional distress turn to drugs and alcohol to suppress their pain much more than those dealing with physical injury.

Synonym of hurt – distressed
Antonym of hurt – healthy

  1. I think you are absolutely right that emotional pain is worse. I deal with chronic physical pain and find it is easier to work around than major emotional hurts. This is my first year in A-to-Z also. 🙂

    • I deal with chronic physical pain as well. What bothers me the most is knowing that there are things I can no longer do. Sometimes I think it’s better when your brain goes before your body, because you don’t realize all the things you are missing.

  2. An interesting post on hurt – which is such a powerful thing. Emotional hurt especially and it’s probably because it is so difficult to heal that it features so heavily in stories and poetry.

    • When someone uses words to hurt us it’s something we never forget. That is why the pain seems to always be there. Thank you for reading and commenting on my post.

  3. I agree that emotional pain has no medicine or cure. Over time it may reduce or cause less distress but I dont think it will ever go away. One simply has to learn to focus the mind away from it. Easier said than done!

    • I can still remember hurtful things that have been said to me over 30 years ago! But I can’t remember the pain of my broken foot. Thanks for reading and commenting on my blog.

  4. Wow, that quote is so powerful. And true. It makes me so sad to think of all the hate in the world. I also find it interesting that no one picked ‘physical’. Bruises fade but emotional scars are so hard to move past because most people aren’t taught how to let go, forgive, and move on.

It’s not an easy thing to do by far. It takes a lot of determination and self-love to not let emotional pain hold you back. And while the memories will always remain, the hurt feelings do not need to. Love these posts, Cheryl. 🙂
