Fear

“Without fear there cannot be courage.” -Christoper Paolini

cowardice, faintheartedness, fright, trembling
F is for Fear

We have all heard stories of people who have somehow found the strength to lift a car to save a child who was trapped underneath. But how can a person find the strength to lift an automobile that weights at least 3,000 pounds? Fear of imminent death, whether it is the person themselves or another person can cause the body to react in a multiple of ways. These situations of superhuman strength have been linked to adrenaline, a hormone that can increase strength for short periods of time. It is this type of fear that often leads to a positive outcome. Being a little fearful of certain things can be helpful to us, such as when we are facing a test or have to make a speech. Fear in these situations can sometimes bring out the best in us. Other types of fear can be excessive and crippling. Some examples of this can be a person living in a fearful situation, someone who has experienced a traumatic event that triggers a fear response, or having a phobia of certain things such as spiders or heights. Some people experience a fear of things that cannot actually harm us. We have all experienced fear, although in different ways, as this is a pre-programed emotion in us all. Fear is an emotion that not only people experience, but animals as well.

Do you experience a phobia of a certain thing? Will you share what it is or are you afraid : )

Synonym of fear – terror
Antonym of fear – bravery

  1. I have plenty of fears in my life, but I don’t think more than most people, nor do I think they’ve reached the stage of ‘phobia’. They don’t significantly impact my life in a negative way, anyway LOL

  2. I have a fear of speaking in public I start to sweat, tremble, stammer and my brain fries it literally goes blank. I also used to have a phobia of needles but went for hypnotherapy over this it kinda helped hehe

  3. I have many fears but try to remember what Nelson Mandela said -“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

  4. This will sound crazy, but I like fear. lol Probably because I know it so well. I’ve definitely allowed my fears/anxiety to control my life to some extent. That’s not great, but it’s hard to move past fear, especially on your own. But the part I love is how awesome it feels when you’re able to move past a fear. 🙂 It made me feel like I can do anything.

  5. Fear is what triggered my second breakdown. I was so afraid of what it was like to go without sleep that I stopped sleeping (my fear actually brought about what I feared.) I still struggle with this fear of not sleeping, but I am taking steps, very careful steps, to overcome it.
