O Is For Origin (Sheltand Sheepdog) ~ A to Z Blogging Challenge 2020

The Shetland Sheepdog (aka the Sheltie) originated from the Shetland Islands. This group of islands is part of Scotland and can be found about 130 miles north of the Scottish mainland. The environment of the Shetland Islands is harsh, producing a windy, cold and wet climate most of the year. These islands are not only known for the Shetland Sheepdog, but Shetland Sheep and Shetland Ponies, as well.

There seems to be a lot of debate and mystery as to how developing of a Shetland Sheepdog came to be. The original Sheepdog of the Shetland Islands was a Spitz type of dog. This breed was developed for herding. The first Sheltie made its debut in the United States in 1908.

Message from a Sheltie Mom – Researching the origin of the Shetland Sheepdog was interesting. It’s a fun fact to know that Misty Blue’s ancestors came from Scotland. I can understand the double coat of this breed more now. The undercoat would protect the dog from the cold weather while the top coat helped repel moisture during wet weather.

Herding, still to this day, seems to be a big part of a Shelties personality. Misty Blue is always trying to herd something. If she isn’t going around and around my kitchen table she is circling someone in hopes of keeping them where she thinks they should be.

Does your Shetland Sheepdog have that strong desire to herd like their Shetland Island ancestors?
