W Is For Working Ability (Shetland Sheepdog) ~ A to Z Blogging Challenge 2020

Shetland Sheepdogs (aka the Sheltie) originated from the Shetland Islands of Scotland where their outstanding herding instincts were often put to the test. Shelties performed effectively in herding livestock, which included sheep, cattle, ponies and poultry, along the rugged terrain of the islands. Their bark was not only used to guide these animals, but scare away birds of prey. Their active, agile, sturdy and intelligent nature makes them a great working dog!

Many Shelites of today are a bit larger than their Shetland Island ancestors but have maintained their intelligence and work ethic. Their incredible herding instinct remains a part of their DNA. Some Shetland Sheepdogs, although family companions, participate in herding competitions.

Message from a Sheltie mom – I love that the Shetland Sheepdog has such an interesting history. Learning about this breed has given me much insight as to understanding certain things about Misty Blue’s behavior.

Last summer I bought a large ball from Walmart. Misty Blue loved it and it wasn’t long before she was herding it to me. I would throw it or kick it and she would bring it back to me by running around it and getting it to go toward me. She did this on her own, I didn’t teach her. Funny thing is, she has to have a ball or toy in her mouth when she does it. That’s ok with me because it keeps her from barking!.

Other than a Sheltie, do you own another great working dog breed?
