F Is For Famous Shetland Sheepdogs (Shetland Sheepdog) ~ A to Z Blogging Challenge 2020

Calamity Jane – While in office, President Calvin Coolidge was gifted a pure white Shetland Sheepdog (aka the Sheltie). Originally named Diana of Wildwood, Mrs. Coolidge renamed the rambunctious Sheltie Calamity Jane based on her ability to always be getting into things she shouldn’t and getting dirty. Since Calamity Jane needed bathing daily, President Coolidge had a dog bathing tub built for the White House. Having a Sheltie in the White House brought about a wide spread popularity for this breed.

Ch Halstor’s Peter Pumkin ROM – This Shetland Sheepdog had a remarkable show career. Sold as a young show dog, this Sheltie won the ASSA National Specialty Best of Breed in 1968 and again in 1974. He had over one hundred Best of Breeds awards, 3 all breed Best in Shows awards, and over 40 group placements. This amazing Sheltie sired 160 champions.

Message from a Sheltie mom – I really admire those owners who decide to place their Sheltie (and other breeds) in competitions. It looks like a lot of hard work between the grooming, training and what is expected in the ring. I would think it could be a very daunting experience.

Misty Blue is smart enough to learn what it takes to be in competitions. Unfortunately, she deals with extreme anxiety which limits her attention span. She seems to train better when she is the only student and there are no distractions. All it takes is a noise or movement and she forgets all about what she is supposed to be doing.
