If dog hair drives you crazy then a Shetland Sheepdog (aka the Sheltie) is not for you. This double coated breed sheds a lot! Puppies, due to their fur being short and not having their undercoat yet, barely shed at all. Adult Shelties are known to shed large quantities of hair, especially around Springtime, which is their molting season. Males molt once a year, as do Female Shelties who have been spayed. Unspayed Females molt after every heat cycle.
To reduce the hair you may find around your house or on your clothing, brushing your Sheltie often is recommended. Extra brushing should occur during molting season.
Message from a Sheltie mom – Misty Blue will be two years old in June. She doesn’t have the amount of hair that most Shelties do. I have read that fur growth can take up to three years. Often length of hair is genetic. Since I have no information on her parents, only time will tell how long of a coat she will have.
Misty Blue will let you brush her but you can tell she really doesn’t like it. She has been spayed so shedding shouldn’t be as bad as it could be.

We really do have to love our pets one heck of a lot, Cheryl; they really do need lots of attention.
My little Papillons are single coated. However, their coat sheds year round. So, brushing is a must… 🙂
One of them, Beau, absolutely loves to be brushed and will sit forever hoping for more. The other, Pebble, hates it. I have to scold her to get her to sit still. They are truly chalk and cheese. Both adorable, of course! 🙂
