Lily’s Legacy was founded by Alice Mayn in memory of a 14 year old golden retriever that she had fostered. This non-profit organization, which is located in Petaluma, California provides a sanctuary for senior large breed dogs. These dogs are either adopted out or remain at the sanctuary until they pass.
Lily was found wandering the streets and was eventually picked up and taken to an animal shelter. Alice saw the frail dog with a bad nasal infection and small tumor on her eye, and fell in love with her instantly. Unfortunately, due to her many health problems Lily died four months after she was fostered.
According to the website Alice believes that it was Lily who really inspired the sanctuary.
These senior residents have been saved from euthanasia and live their lives in a home environment, receiving good food, veterinary care, and grooming. There is plenty of space for running and playing and there is an abundance of human interaction.
