Since I was diagnosed with Vasovagal Syncope my comfort zone has been my home.
For those who don’t know what this condition is, it’s a heart condition that suddenly causes your heart rate and blood pressure to drop, which causes some people to faint. I have Vasovagal Near Syncope because so far, I haven’t actually fainted. I come real close, though. And it’s scary!
My warning signs are lightheadedness, which makes me feel like I am going to faint. Often times I start sweating. I have gotten confused before and my field of vision has turned black.
There are several things that can cause this. My heart doctor and vasovagal specialist have both told me they are unsure of what causes mine, but together we have found out that standing too long is one.
I have been told by my doctors that if a episode comes on I am to lie on a flat surface, such as a bed or floor. This helps restore blood flow and can prevent fainting. Needless to say, I have had to lie down on the floor of The Dollar Tree, Walmart and Stop & Shop.
Because of this, I don’t go shopping a lot. And when I do, I run in, get what I need and get out as soon as I can. All the time worried that an episode will rear its ugly head.
As for any recreational activities, I had not participated in any since my diagnosis. Getting to the point of almost passing out, plus hearing stories of people getting seriously hurt from actually fainting, has done a number on my mental health when it comes to going any where in public.
On January 2, 2022, I decided to throw caution to the wind. I left my comfort zone and headed to the bowling alley. I stayed 2 hours and had a great time! No vasovagal near syncope events. Hopefully this will be the start of getting out and doing things again.
I hope you get to do more things in 2022. Keeping fingers crossed 🤞
Thank you. I am sure going to try!
