Plucked From The News ~ Endangered Behren’s Siverspot Butterflies Anticipated For Release At The Coastline Of Northern California

PLUCKED FROM THE NEWS….

I LOVE butterflies so when I saw news articles about this, I just had to write about it.

It’s in the mid to late summer when the Behren’s Silverspot Butterfly will mate and lay eggs. But due to the destruction of their habitat, these butterflies now find themselves on the endangered species list.

During the caterpillar stage these butterflies would feed off of a small purple flower known as the blue violet. These flowers used to exist abundantly on coastal prairies. Invasive grasses and cattle grazing are just a few examples that have lead to the reduction of this much needed plant.

But there is good news for the Behren’s Silverspot Butterfly!

A grant for 1.5 million dollars from the State Of California Wildlife Conservation Board has been approved. With this money, the Mendocino Land Trust is restoring habitat for these butterflies by planting 35,000 blue violets.

Speyeria Conservation and Research will be releasing caterpillars bred in captivity into the new habitat.

Habitat for the Behren’s Silverspot Butterfly will be restored at multiple sites.
