Cass Elliot
September 19, 1941 – July 29, 1974
One of the first singing groups that I remember when I was a child was The Mamas and The Papas. Four very talented performers made up this vocal group, Michelle and John Phillips, Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty.
I can still remember singing along with the car radio to Monday, Monday and California Dreamin’.
When the band broke up in 1968, I was glad to see that Cass Elliot had decided to begin a solo career, as she was my favorite singer from that group.
It was a neighborhood friend who informed me of her death, at the age of 32. It was first reported that Elliot had died from chocking on a ham sandwich. Her cause of death was later confirmed as a heart attack.
In 1998, The Mamas and The Papas were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Elliot’s daughter, Owen, accepted this posthumously award for her mother.

Great choice.
Thanks Peggy, I thought so too!
Cheryl, JUST SUPER GREAT JOB HERE!!! Love Cass Elliott & the whole career story of The Mamas & The Papas!!!!!!!!! What sounds they made!!!!!!!!!!! Phil from excuseusforliving.com
Thank you! She and the rest of the group sure made some great music!
It’s my opinion that without Mama Cass, we never would have heard of The Mamas and The Papas. She was magnificent. A little trivia: she died in Harry Nilsson’s apartment.
I never knew about her dying in Harry Nilsson’s apartment. I googled it in hopes of finding more information and was surprised to learn that Keith Moon from the Who also died in that same apartment. That’s a bit freaky!
Ain’t it, though?
It sure is!
Such a beautiful, rich voice. I still love listening to her.
So do I….
What an amazing talent! I knew she had died young, but didn’t realize she was that young!
So glad you posted “Dream a Little Dream of Me”. It’s one of my all-time faves.
Dream A Little Dream of Me is one of my favorites also!
All the leaves are brown… “California dreaming” is perfect for a day like this one. I still play their greatest hits. “This is dedicated to the one I love”. Aaarrr bliss. :0)
I also listen to their greatest hits on occasion.
She had a beautiful voice. Thanks for sharing her songs and story! 32 years old is much too young 😦
I agree, it is sad that such a talent was taken away much too young.
So much fun reading your blog. We sometimes forget those great voices. Yes, Mamma Cass was brilliant and beautiful!
I agree!
Loved The Mamas and The Papas 🙂
Me too!
What a voice. Loved her! ‘Dream’ is my favorite, but really anything she sang, with or without the M&P, was brilliant. 🎶🎶🎶
I absolutely agree with you!
I loved Mama Cass. The Mamas and the Papas put out some great music. Recognizable sixty years later!
