Musical Monday Special Edition ~ Remembering Cass Elliot

Cass Elliot
September 19, 1941 – July 29, 1974

One of the first singing groups that I remember when I was a child was The Mamas and The Papas. Four very talented performers made up this vocal group, Michelle and John Phillips, Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty.

I can still remember singing along with the car radio to Monday, Monday and California Dreamin’.

When the band broke up in 1968, I was glad to see that Cass Elliot had decided to begin a solo career, as she was my favorite singer from that group.

It was a neighborhood friend who informed me of her death, at the age of 32. It was first reported that Elliot had died from chocking on a ham sandwich. Her cause of death was later confirmed as a heart attack.

In 1998, The Mamas and The Papas were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Elliot’s daughter, Owen, accepted this posthumously award for her mother.

  1. It’s my opinion that without Mama Cass, we never would have heard of The Mamas and The Papas. She was magnificent. A little trivia: she died in Harry Nilsson’s apartment.
