Welcome to Musical Monday! Music has been known to affect our emotions. Listening to music can make us happy or sad, relaxed or motivated, put us to sleep or make us want to dance. Music absolutely plucks at our heartstrings bringing to the surface a multitude of emotions.
Someone once described music to me as a time machine. When we listen it often transports us back to a place in time. A certain song can bring back feelings of someone we loved, our wedding day, someone who died, or any of the many important times in our lives.
Music has always been a big part of my life. When I am sad listening to a sad song often allows me to release that sadness. Happy songs tend to take away my sadness. It has helped motivate me to do housework. Yep, just crank up the radio or a music television station and I’m good to go. Warning: Be careful not to turn your music up too loud though. I have actually blown out the speakers in a television once doing this.
I have been known to start singing in a store when a song that I like comes on, I tend to sing along with songs while I am driving, and it isn’t unusual to see me moving to the music in my computer chair as I sit and listen to music.
This week I am posting songs with the word one in the title. Please leave your favorite song with one in the title in the comments below. You may see your song posted in upcoming blog posts. Also please take the poll at the end of this post. And if you have enjoyed this blog post don’t forget to sign up to follow my blog so you’ll never miss a Musical Monday post. It was a tough choice.
: )
Ones to add (see what I did there?) – One of us (Abba) and One love (Bob Marley).
I will add the ones that you mentioned next time : ) (did you see what I did…lol)
I voted for Orleans, but only because U2’s “One” wasn’t a choice! Great list, though!
Thank you! I don’t think I know the U2 One song so I am going to find it on youtube to see. I’ll have to add it next time!
There’s also “For No One” by The Beatles. Great list!
Thanks John! I don’t think I ever heard For No One by the Beatles. I’ll have to listen to it on YouTube. There is a possibility once I hear it I will remember.
It’s on “Revolver,” one of my favorite albums of all time.
I would also vote “For No One.” However, the Lawrence Welk version of “One Toke Over the Line” is a close runner-up
Whenever I watch a Lawrence Welk song I always remember my grandmother sitting in her chair watching the show. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Take care.
I love this post — so many great “One” songs!” It’s true – music is a time machine, and what a journey back in time. Thank you!
I have fun putting together my Musical Monday posts. Glad that you liked it!
Hi Cheryl,
Music is a time machine to me too. Like when I was just listening to Alicia Keys it reminded me when I moved back in with moms. I always played her songs.
You can find me singing all the times. And it doesn’t matter what song.
I love all kinds of music from Neo-soul, Reggae to Alternative rock.
Although I voted for Keys I’m wondering should I had picked Larry Graham. Why?
Because it took me back when I was a kid.
Thanks for the journey back in time.
Hi Vernon. I love all kinds of music as well. I like music from all years but the 70’s are my favorite. I listen to today’s music as a way of keeping up my “hip and modern grandmother image” LOL There are some very talented singers of today’s music. It’s amazing how one song can bring back so many memories. Thanks for stopping by!
That was awesome! Thank you for posting.
I really love “One Headlight” by the Wallfowers
Wow, I totally forgot about that song. It’s a great song!
Sorry that you did not include the Bee Gees: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW1jnkHOO-U
I love the Bee Gees. Hearing them always brings me back to my dancing days : )
I love them, too!
Thank you for stopping by Storyteller.
Hi Ray. Looking forward to reading more of your blog posts!
One Toke Over the Line! A really funny story is that Lawrence Welk had that song performed on his show as a “modern spiritual.” It does have “Jesus” in it, but I’m guessing he didn’t know what “toke” meant–and no one told him! Watch it on YouTube: https://youtu.be/t8tdmaEhMHE
I don’t think they knew…Thanks for the laugh!
So hard to choose from all these great songs!
It was hard to choose 10 for the blog post from my long list of ONE songs : ) Thank you for stopping by.
what a playlist 🙂
Thank you!
This is really a cool blog. I am really happy I found it. I need to catch up on your works. I like the Musical Monday idea. It’s a good one. You are a genius.
Thank you! My Musical Monday posts bring the most visitors to my blog. I noticed that you like music as well.
I love music, and movies.
I have always loved music. Movies, not so much…
Anything that tells a story. Music, writing and movies for me, do that.
I always liked her songs.
Some great ones here.
Thank you!
Great compilation! Blondie is my personal favorite.
Valerie // avecvalerie.com
Thank you Valerie. I like Blondie too.
What a fun blog! I thought of “One is the Loneliest Number”. Great idea for a blog – good job! 🙂
Thank you Lynn. i am surprised I didn’t think of that one!
That is the first doing I thought of, too. What a fun idea, though, Cheryl. I didn’t have time to listen to them so I hope I come back. As a musician myself, everything you said I could have written myself. Music really is a time machine. I’ve often thought, music today, in my opinion got worse when my kids were teens and rap became popular and some of it is awful. It has gotten better some and more has a little music in it but in the past 20 years it’s been boring repetition. How do these “songs” become Golden Oldies when this generation wants to smile with the memories it creates? It can’t. I’m what is called a dinosaur in music – the over 60 player. But when you really are a player your music gets better , because of experience. You can find me at soundcloud.com/sonni-quick. I’m the soundtrack of your dreams. Thanks for a great post.
When the 90’s hit I didn’t listen to music as much. Most of the genre at that time didn’t impress me. I agree that today there are some good musicians who have some really great songs. But music, to me, isn’t the same as it was back in the day : )
Yasmin Levy – Una Noche Mas (One more night) – She’s one of my favourite artists
Great blog and like you I love music, it plays a big part in my life and I often use it when I write.
I can’t imagine a world without music, can you?
No i can’t. The world would be less colourful without it.
How amazing was Whitney Houston in her day?
Such talent!
One is the Loneliest Number
Great song and one I will add next time I post Songs with the word one in the title. Thanks for the suggestion.
One Tin Soldier
I wanted to add One Tin Soldier, it’s one of my favorites. I couldn’t find a good youtube video of it though : (
Good list of songs – Merci for liking 24/7 in France, author of “Solitary Desire-One Woman’s Journey to France”- video http://youtu.be/xG_YTa5sDac & wishing you all the best!
Here is a “one” song that is not only a great song by a great vocalist, but is appropriate for the month of May:
What a great idea! I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Thank you! It’s fun doing these posts but sometimes hard to choose which song to add.
Thank you for following my manningtreearchive. It’s a honour, Cheryl 🙂
I enjoy reading your blog posts. Thank you for following me as well!
I totally agree with you about music! It is such a big part of my life!
A great list that you compiled.
It is wonderful to hear your dedication to music. It always was a big part of my life and Classical Guitar became my voice for many years.
Songs with One…..I do love One day at a time with Lynda Randell so you can add that to the list .😊 .
Thanks Cheryl for visiting my blog
miriam
Don’t know if this is the actual title. The chorus goes ‘I wanna be the one when all is said and done…lived a good life’ by Kenny Chesney.
This was a neat idea. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for stopping by : )
Terrific post
Thank you.
Cheryl, Musical Monday about “one” was great! Thanks for the “Like” for my post on Economic Inequality, the issue of our time along with Climate Change! Phil from excuseusforliving.com
Hi Phil. I like reading your blog posts as I often learn something. Take care.
Thanks for sharing, there are plenty of songs with the word ‘one’ in the title that are also great..ranging from Bee Gees, Prince, Michael Jackson, Kelli Clarkson, Jordin sparks to Notorious BIG! Thanks also for taking the time to read my post and the ‘like’. Peace and blessings! 🙂
It was hard for me to only choose 10 “one” songs as there are so many!
Yes, agree there are!
What a fun post. Love the tunes. Thanks for stopping by and liking Summer Reunion.
I enjoyed my visit to your blog : )
Thank you ☺️
There were definitely some great ones here! 🎶 And thank you for swinging by the “Ranch.” We 💖 visitors.
I really enjoy your blog. Have gone from being a visitor to a follower : )
Thanks so much for swinging by the Ranch and for the follow. We ❤️ visitors!
You are welcome. I enjoy reading your blog posts!
I checked my itunes for “one” songs and pulled up quite a few good ones, but the three with the most listens were “One Man’s Ceiling Is Another Man’s Floor”, “You Just May Be the One” and “One Note Samba” (Paul Simon, the Monkees, and The Postmarks, respectively).
Good ones!
Fun post. Lotta memories.
Glad that you liked the post.
One is the Loneliest Number – Three Dog Night
How about One Enchanted Evening from the musical South Pacific? Cool blog!
That is a good one! Thanks.
Not to change the subject (well, sort of) but talking about songs bringing back memories, here’s something else that does the same thing: smells. Some songs are very strong memory inducers. They can remind you of a person, a particular time in your life, all sorts of things. For instance whenever I smell gasoline I think of my dad and also my mom. They’ve both been gone a long time now, but the gasoline smell can bring them back briefly. When I was a child we took a summer vacation every year. Back then you could get free road maps at gas stations, so each time we entered a new state my dad would pull into a station to fill up and get a map. Good memories! Anyway I love music and the way it can also trigger memories.
Interesting blog, Cheryl!
I agree with you, smells also trigger memories. The smell of lilacs always takes me back to the home I lived in when I was little. We had lilacs all around the yard.
Whew! I’m always amazed when I look back at these from long ago to realize how many songs fit the category. The first one that popped into my head was Three Dog Night, so I was glad to see that on your list. I love the opening piano sound of that tune. I was pleasantly surprised to see Orleans, one of the most underrated bands, in my opinion.
Some Musical Monday blog posts can be a challenge. I always liked the group Orleans, but I agree with you, that band was underrated. Thank you for stopping by! I appreciate it.
I’m a big Blondie fan so it was an easy choice.
Blondie fan myself!
I have never heard One Toke Over The Line.. Until now.
Thanks for sharing the love of music 🙂
One of These Nights – Eagles
