#Bloganuary ~ What Is Something You Learned Recently ~ January 29, 2023

Something that I learned recently is that Empty Nest Syndrome is real. For those who may not know what that is, it’s feelings of grief and loneliness a parent may feel when their child moves out. It can lead to depression. A lot of times it happens with the last child.

Not all parents deal with this syndrome. Some look forward to that little birdie flying away. While others grieve a relationship that will not be the same.

This past summer was a tough one for me. My youngest son got married and moved a town over. I always thought I would be good when that time came. I didn’t expect to experience overwhelming sadness and feeling that now I had no purpose in life. I had dedicated most of my life to raising my children. It all revolved around them. Who was I, besides a mother?

It didn’t help that I was dealing with a handful of other stressful life events at the same time.

I have to say, a Facebook support group for Empty Nesters has been a life saver!

I’m doing better now.

  1. Well done in joining the support group! Other avenues to consider are: book club; craft group; gardening; social; art, walking or even martial arts. The adage, ‘the world is your oyster,’ can apply to ‘empty nesters.’ Bouquets 💐 to you.

  2. Oh dear! My two sons also left me. More over, they left my country and live far away from me. But I don’t have that syndrome. I am happy to live now for myself and travel from to time to visit them. I love it. 🙂
